On Friday, Nov. 15, CASA Mental Health recognized National Philanthropy Day — a global celebration of giving and philanthropy — at an awards reception and celebration. This annual event is hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Edmonton and Area Chapter, and provides a forum for sharing stories about individuals, companies, groups and volunteers who are making a difference through their philanthropic efforts.
This year, CASA nominated Thomas Beschell, John Bodnar, John McCaffray, Meg Stevenson and Harry Sunner for awards. Learn more about their contributions to child, youth and family mental health care below.
Congratulations to our award recipients!
Thomas Beschell, Award Sector: Youth
Over the past four years, Thomas, age 20, has volunteered his time, wisdom and passion for mental health advocacy as a member of CASA’s Youth and Family Advisory Council. He was appointed to the role of co-chair in August 2022. Following an arduous journey recovering from an eating disorder in his teens, Thomas has helped improve mental health services for other youth, eagerly volunteering for any opportunity to destigmatize mental health, provide advice based on his lived experience or fundraise for CASA. In his leadership role as co-chair, he unites youth and family members in advising CASA and destigmatizing mental health on the council. At a CASA fundraising event in 2024, Thomas stood in front of the crowd and told his story. Dozens of donors approached him afterwards to express their gratitude for illuminating the importance of the mental health services that CASA provides in the ‘missing middle.’ Thomas also shared his story on a recent episode of CASA’s podcast. Through his passion and dedication, Thomas is shaping the landscape of mental illness treatment for the better.
“My life has been critically shaped by the individuals who supported me throughout my adolescence. It is my honour and privilege to pay forward the time and energy that was invested in me by doing my part to make mental health services for children, youth and families in Alberta the best that they can be.” – Thomas Beschell
John Bodnar, Award Sector: Community Enrichment
John has made a huge impact on the lives of the children and families that we serve at CASA Mental Health. He has been raising funds for kids’ mental health for more than eight years, taking part in CASA’s golf tournaments, cycle tours and gala. John has managed to outperform himself year-after-year, cycling close to 1,000 kilometres annually and raising over $300,000 for CASA’s programs. He has contributed multiple in-kind donations and volunteer hours at CASA events. John is a true advocate for mental health, bringing greater awareness to CASA programs in both his work and community.
John McCaffray, Award Sector: Community Enrichment
John has been a dedicated donor for almost a decade and serves in a leadership role as a CASA board member. He played a crucial role in introducing hot lunches for children in CASA’s Day Program. Over the years, he has provided essential support through his participation in CASA’s golf tournaments, gala and cycle tour.
John demonstrates a deep personal commitment to the mental health of our community, inspiring his family and those around him to get involved in CASA’s initiatives. His dedication has advanced CASA’s mission and enriched our community.
Meg Stevenson, Award Sector: Health
Meg has helped advance children’s mental health care through her community fundraising event, Peace in the Park. Over the past decade, Meg has shown a commitment to community well-being, and has positively impacted the lives of the children, youth and families that CASA serves.
Meg has raised thousands of dollars for CASA Mental Health over the past seven years and the community in general for the past decade. Her determination to incorporate transformative yoga practices into everyday physical health and mental well-being while fundraising for our cause is inspiring.
“Children are truly the most valuable resource we have.” – Meg Stevenson
Harry Sunner, Award Sector: Community Enrichment
Over the past 10 years, Harry has demonstrated dedication and generosity through his tireless fundraising efforts for CASA Mental Health. His commitment to CASA’s mission has culminated in a total donation of over $200,000.
Harry has provided vital resources for child, youth and family mental health care, and has also inspired countless others to join the cause. Harry is one of the founders of the CASA Golf Classic Edmonton and his company, Durabuilt Windows & Doors, has been key in raising dollars and bringing awareness to mental health care. His passion and altruism embody the spirit of community and philanthropy.
“Our philosophy is keeping people and community in the centre of our brand. As a private business, Durabuilt Windows & Doors has flourished for over 35 years because of the incredible support from our communities. In gratitude, we have woven philanthropy into the fabric of our success. This commitment not only fuels our growth but also provides a profound sense of fulfilment.” – Harry Sunner
