Mental Health Therapist

Mental health therapists perform in-depth bio-psycho-social mental health evaluations for designated preschoolers, kids and teenagers. They create therapy plans, establish diagnoses and administer therapeutic interventions to help patients reach their objectives.

Child and adolescent psychiatrists are physicians who first specialize in psychiatry and then train further to work with patients and families. They conduct comprehensive assessments to create individualized treatment plans that may include medication, therapy or both. They look at evidence from the literature, seek input from team members of various disciplines, and collaborate with families to develop these treatment plans and monitor for effectiveness and progress. They can help navigate the mental health system, coordinate care, and provide a better understanding of challenges individuals may face. They also advocate for their patients within the healthcare system, as well as in their schools and community. The goal is to support the child as well as the family by providing the right care at the right time so they can thrive in their communities.

Child care counsellors work collaboratively to offer therapy to teenagers facing serious mental health issues and their families. They deliver behaviour guidance, support, supervision and case management to youth and their families.

Therapy support navigators collaborate closely with patients and their caregivers to provide transition support services. They play a crucial role by extending treatment, encouraging the use of learned skills in home and school environments, and leading treatment groups for children, adolescents and parents under the guidance of mental health therapists.

Therapy support assistants create and execute personalized treatment plans for children and teenagers, utilizing diverse treatment methods focused on proven cognitive and behavioural principles.

Addictions counsellors offer treatment for teenagers and their families dealing with addiction and co-occurring mental health issues. They adhere to the training and ethical standards of their discipline, utilizing evidence-based practices in their work.

Licensed practical nurses work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to provide and coordinate services for children, youth and families. They provide nursing assessments and care plans for patients, including medication administration and monitoring, teaching, telephone follow-up and health promotion.

Mental health consultants provide expert guidance, treatment strategies and alternate viewpoints to fellow professionals through a consultative approach, covering areas such as assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, discharge process and possible referrals. Consultants work together to develop resources and conduct educational and training sessions.

Occupational therapists provide assessment, intervention and consultation. They evaluate skills and limitations caused by a variety of physical, cognitive and environmental factors. OTs also offer guidance to patients and families to help them understand the issues and care needed.

Mental health nurses provide nursing assessments and care, including medication administration and monitoring, teaching, telephone follow-up and health promotion.

Speech language pathologists screen and assess of speech, language, communication and related disorders.

Assessment psychologists conduct and interpret tests for a variety of psychological conditions. They compile comprehensive psychological assessment reports that address the reason for referral and include appropriate recommendations.
